Stories by John Buckley

John Buckley is a retired award winning journalist. His career in local newspapers spanned 36 years and he now runs a community personality-based magazine, Ourtown, at Northwich, Cheshire, where he was born and brought up. He and his wife Christine have four grown-up children.

His stories, short and long, are mostly humorous, as indeed are his occasional poems and lyrics  and his proudest boast is that his words – serious this time – won a competition in Nashville where they were turned into a song by a recording studio. Have a listen here.

The opening is a bit turgid, he says, but stick with it and Not Thinking Of You soon becomes one of the finest country and western songs ever produced. No, really.

John also wrote the gags that inspired his book The One Liner Man, which is available here soon along with Bonnie and Claude. They are actually his second and third novels; his first won an online competition and was about to go mainstream when the company went bust. Ah, well.

Love Hearts is the title of John’s next book, which he hopes will be as fizzy as the famous childhood favourite sweets by the Swizzel company and he is also compiling a volume of shorter stories. So watch this space. Well, not all the time obviously.

BONNIE and CLAUDE

The two heroes, for different reasons, end up as residents of an elderly persons home, but within hours they accidentally rob a post office and go on the run. The police are in frantic pursuit, but will Inspector Ginger Baker crown his career by sparing the force’s blushes and capturing the geriatric villains, desperate only in their need for another toilet stop.

THE ONE LINER MAN

Joe Dean, bullied at work by his boss, gambles everything on becoming a stand-up comedian – and flops. Sonia Head, a would-be hypnotherapist, comes to the rescue and they prepare for a brewery competition, Britton’s Got Talent – the real one, not the one on the telly. But will they be able to expose the sinister figures making his life a misery in time to defeat Joe’s stage fright?

The One Liner Man contains original jokes, songs and sketches.
